 Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. was born on November 20, 1942 in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He is the only U.S. president born between the Great Depression of the 1930s and the end of World War II in 1945. He was the eldest of his four children in a family that had fallen on hard times. His father cleaned ovens and was a used car salesman. his mother was a housewife. When Biden was in his junior year, his family moved from Pennsylvania to Delaware, where Biden spent most of the rest of his life.   Biden struggled to overcome his childhood stutter, reviewing his memorized speeches  and planning conversations ahead of time. Although he found more success on the football field than in the classroom, he later graduated from the University of Delaware and earned a law degree from Syracuse University in New York.  

 

He quickly turned to politics, becoming one of the youngest-ever U.S. Senators at the age of 29. A few days before he took office, his wife, Neilia Hunter, and one-year-old daughter, Naomi, died in a car accident. The couple's two young sons, Beau and Hunter, were seriously injured. At first, Biden was unsure if he would make it to the Senate, but he eventually did. In 1973, he was sworn out of his son Beau's hospital room.He then served in the Senate for 36 years until 2009.   Senator to Vice President During his  Senate tenure, Mr. Biden has received both praise and criticism  for his achievements in areas such  as judicial appointments, criminal justice and foreign affairs. During this time, he remarried and added his daughter Ashley to his family with his second wife, Jill Biden.   Senator Biden was named Barack Obama's vice-presidential candidate in 1987 and 2008. He tried unsuccessfully to become president twice, in 1987 and 2007. Obama hoped Biden's working-class roots would help him appeal to voters in battleground states such as Ohio and Pennsylvania.   On November 2, 2008, Obama defeated  Republican presidential candidate  Arizona Senator John McCain. Notable Tasks Biden's primary role was primarily to advise Obama on foreign and economic policy issues. Obama is discussing a number of decisions with Biden, including who should join the cabinet and how the US will deal with the two wars fought in the Middle East, Afghanistan and Iraq. . (Under the 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, the President of the United States can only run for two terms.) But Biden decided against it. In 2015, his eldest son Beau died of brain cancer. Biden noted that his family was still grieving, and he didn't want to lead them through tough choices. Instead, he sided with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who ultimately lost  to businessman Donald Trump in the 2016 election. Unhappy with his performance, Biden decided to run against him in the 2020 election. He announced his candidacy in April 2019, but had to defeat his Democratic rival before he could take on Trump.   At first, Biden didn't do well in the campaign. Several other Democratic candidates were seen as strong challengers to President Trump. But after Biden  won a major South Carolina election in late February 2020, support for Biden surged, prompting other candidates to drop out of the race.By the end of April, Biden was the last remaining Democratic presidential candidate.   Pandemic Presidential Election Campaign  By this time, the coronavirus pandemic had begun, affecting US citizens and people around the world. Both Biden and Trump faced  unique challenges. It's how you run for president with a highly contagious, deadly disease sweeping across the country. While Trump continued to speak at in-person, well-attended rallies, Biden chose to enforce stricter social distancing rules and held much of his campaign  online.   In addition to the pandemic, both candidates have had to deal with racial tensions following multiple high-profile police shootings against black citizens.
